Hecate

(sometimes spelt as Hekate, the Greek spelling)

Is a Greek goddess associated with magic, witchcraft, crossroads, and the night. She is often depicted with torches, snakes, or dogs. Known for her Magik she is well known as a liminal figure, a goddess who exists in the thresholds and in-between spaces of the world. She is both loved and revered and is known as the Queen of Witches, well suited to Hedge Witchery. She lights the way for lost Souls and travelers and renowned for her protection of homes, and people. 

But do not invoke her for the wrong intentions as she is ruthless and things will not turn out well for you if you do. Show her the respect she deserves. Video at bottom of post.

Origin and domains

Hecate originated in Thrace, an area that includes parts of Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey.
She was originally a mother goddess of wilderness and childbirth.
She evolved into the goddess of crossroads and the underworld.
She is also associated with protection from witchcraft, drugs, and the Moon.

Appearance and symbolism

She is often depicted with three heads: a dog, a horse, and a snake.
She is also depicted as a single body with three faces.
She is a liminal figure, a goddess who exists in the thresholds and in-between spaces of the world.
She is associated with doorways and crossroads.

Worship

Her rites often featured food offerings laid on the door step of your home and illuminated cakes.
Some cultures erected statues of Hecate in crossroads or left offerings to her there.
She is also seen as the moon goddess and should be blessed on the full moon (Esbat).
But she is known for her own Dark Moon ritual of Deipnon 

 

Other associations

She is associated with magic, witchcraft, lunar lore, predators and other nocturnal creatures.
She is also seen as a protector of women and childbirth.
