Chakras

Chakras are energy centres that exist within the subtle body.  The word “chakra” comes from the Sanskrit language and means “wheel” or “circle.” These energy centres are thought to be responsible for the flow of vital life force energy, also known as prana or chi, throughout the body.

There are typically seven primary chakras, each associated with a specific location in the body, a unique colour, and various physical, emotional, and spiritual qualities.

  1. Root Chakra (Muladhara). Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra is associated with the colour red and represents grounding, survival instincts, and basic physical needs.
  2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana). Positioned in the lower abdomen, the sacral chakra is associated with the colour orange and is linked to emotions, creativity, sexuality, and pleasure.
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura). Found in the upper abdomen, the solar plexus chakra is associated with the colour yellow and relates to personal power, self-confidence, and inner strength.
  4. Heart Chakra (Anahata). Located in the centre of the chest, the heart chakra is associated with the colour green or pink and represents love, compassion, forgiveness, and emotional healing.
  5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha). Situated at the throat area, the throat chakra is associated with the colour blue and is connected to communication, self-expression, and authentic speech.
  6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)T. Positioned in the middle of the forehead, slightly above the space between the eyebrows, the third eye chakra is associated with the colour indigo and relates to intuition, insight, and spiritual awareness.
  7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara). Located at the top of the head, the crown chakra is associated with the colour violet or white and represents higher consciousness, spiritual connection, and enlightenment.

Practitioners of yoga, meditation, and various energy healing modalities, such as Reiki, often work with chakras to balance and align them. When the chakras are in harmony, the individual experiences physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Conversely, imbalances or blockages in the chakras can lead to physical and psychological issues.

Balancing chakras typically involves techniques like meditation, visualization, yoga postures, chanting, and the use of crystals or essential oils.

The chakras all rotate clockwise, and extend out of the body by up to 4 inches. A healing practitioner can see blockages and help remove them so the energy flows naturally as it should.
